Welcome

The Griffin Institute for Surgical Training and Research is a leading charity that invests in the future by giving patients healthier, safer outcomes and supports the NHS by underpinning advances in healthcare.

We possess nearly 30 years of experience, converting the best in surgical training and medical research into genuine successes that transform patient care. We train the next generation of NHS surgeons and NHS healthcare professionals and provide a hub for conducting pioneering research to benefit patients, the NHS, and the local and national economy.

We do this by:

  • Providing bespoke training in robotic surgery and other advanced Minimally Invasive Surgical (MIS) techniques (laparoscopy, endoscopy and microsurgery)
  • Supporting translational and innovative research that advances patient health
  • Delivering high-quality and novel preclinical studies.

A message from our Honorary President

Welcome to The Griffin Institute, a pre-eminent registered charity offering training to NHS surgeons and other healthcare professionals in cutting-edge surgical techniques, including Robotics, and supporting translational and innovative medical research. The Institute’s amazing work gives patients of all ages improved and healthier outcomes.

I have always been a passionate supporter of healthcare in the UK, having undergone life-saving treatment myself as a child. Being only too aware of the value of new and improved surgical methods and medical research, I was delighted to fund the refurbishment of The Griffin Institute to establish a state-of-the-art environment for its incredible work, and to provide a base to bring together gifted professionals from all over the world.

Please get in touch if you would like to donate to The Griffin Institute and assist in its vision of supporting the NHS and improving outcomes for patients. Together, we can transform even more lives.

History of The Griffin Institute

  • Medical research, both preclinical and clinical, has formed a recognisable feature of the Northwick Park Hospital site since the opening of the original Northwick Park Hospital early in the 1970s.
  • The Medical Research Council (MRC) funded Clinical Research Centre (CRC) and fulfilled this role until 1994.
  • In 1994, Northwick Park Hospital Trust asked Professor Colin Green to set up an independent medical research group as a stand-alone charity, to carry out preclinical research into conditions of local and national concern.
  • Northwick Park Institute for Medical Research (NPIMR) was thus formed in 1994 combining some NPIMR home grown research and surgical training.
  • Over the next 20 years, NPIMR rationalised the research undertaken to ensure direct relevance to patients and the NHS.
  • Concomitantly a significant increase in training, particularly complex surgical procedures was developed and maintained. During this time attention was also paid to increasing collaborative connections both with academia and commercial enterprises and funding streams were established through grants, donations, contract research, and training.
  • In 2017 NPIMR took over the Blond McIndoe laboratories which increased the wound healing portfolio.
  • 2019 The Griffin Institute founded.
