Our Training Institutes is based in a Hospital setting. This roadmap outlines the priority actions required to achieve meaningful, measurable reductions in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions while maintaining high‑quality patient care. We remain committed to achieving net zero by 2050.
1. Establish an Institute-Specific Emissions Baseline
• Conduct a full GHG inventory, including anaesthetic gases, nitrous oxide pipelines, electricity for training theatres and imaging, medical devices, PPE, client and staff travel, and waste.
• Identify major emission hotspots (typically: procurement, energy use, gases).
2. Set Ambitious but Achievable Science-Based Targets
• Align with SBTi Healthcare, NHS Net Zero, or equivalent national frameworks.
• Prioritise high-impact commitments:
• Eliminate desflurane use
• Reduce nitrous oxide losses
• Transition to 100% renewable electricity
• Electrify fleet vehicles
• Reduce clinical waste volumes
3. Implement High-Impact Decarbonisation Initiatives

4. Governance, Reporting & Assurance
• Establish a Sustainability Leadership Group including clinicians, trainees, trainers estates, procurement, finance, and infection control.
• Publish annual emissions data and progress against targets.
• Use recognised standards (e.g., ISO 14064) for verification.
5. Culture & Engagement
• Empower clinical “Green Champions”.
• Communicate progress to staff, patients, and partners.
• Provide training on sustainable clinical practice and procurement.
6. Offset Remaining Emissions Responsibly
• After reductions, use only high-quality, verified carbon removals to address unavoidable residual emissions.
Summary of Expected Benefits
• Reduced operational costs (energy savings, waste reduction).
• Improved and staff wellbeing through cleaner, more efficient environments.
• Enhanced organisational resilience and compliance with national net‑zero targets.
• Strengthened institutional leadership in sustainable healthcare.
